X7R MLCC Capacitance Ladder: 12 of 12 E12 Steps in Every Decade to 1 uF, Then Only 3 to 6 of 12

The X7R MLCC capacitance ladder from Walsin is complete to 1 uF and sparse above it. At 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210 every decade from 100 pF to 1 uF lists all 12 E12 steps; the 1 to 10 uF decade lists 3, 5, 6 and 5. We counted 5,668 distinct X7R part numbers.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the combined MLCC export published by Walsin Technology (Walsin): 24,026 rows, 23,601 distinct part numbers. This post is written from that file, 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx, filtered to the X7R dielectric at five case sizes and read value by value against the E12 preferred-number list. Every part number below is real. The question is the one a BOM asks the moment it leaves the round numbers: if 1.2 uF is on the drawing, is there a Walsin X7R part at that value?

How complete is the Walsin X7R capacitance ladder below 1 uF?

Complete, at every size that reaches the decade. We parsed all 5,668 X7R part numbers at 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210, converted each capacitance string to picofarads and tested it against the 12 E12 mantissas (1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 3.9, 4.7, 5.6, 6.8, 8.2) in each decade. At 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210 every one of the four decades from 100 pF to 1 uF holds 12 of 12 steps: 192 of 192 slots filled.

Case size 100 pF to 1 nF 1 to 10 nF 10 to 100 nF 100 nF to 1 uF 1 to 10 uF 10 to 100 uF Match / mismatch against a full E12 ladder
0402 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 4 of 12 1 of 12 0 of 12 Mismatch from 100 nF upward
0603 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 3 of 12 0 of 12 Match to 1 uF, mismatch above
0805 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 5 of 12 1 of 12 Match to 1 uF, mismatch above
1206 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 6 of 12 2 of 12 Match to 1 uF, mismatch above
1210 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 12 of 12 5 of 12 3 of 12 Match to 1 uF, mismatch above

We have not seen this counted anywhere. The break is not gradual. A ladder that is 12 of 12 in four consecutive decades drops to 3, 5, 6 or 5 of 12 in the next one, and the drop sits at the same value, 1 uF, at four different case sizes. For what the dielectric code itself promises, see NP0 vs X7R vs X5R.

Where does the X7R ladder thin out, and by how much?

At 1 uF, and by more than half. Across the four sizes that complete the lower decades, the 1 to 10 uF decade holds 19 of 48 E12 slots, 39.6 percent, against 192 of 192 below it. At 0603 the decade keeps 3 steps: 1.0, 2.2 and 4.7 uF, on 28, 10 and 5 part numbers. The larger sizes add 1.5 and 3.3 uF.

1.5 uF 0 8 11 8 0805B155J100 Match at three sizes, mismatch at 0603
1.8 uF 0 0 0 0 none Mismatch — listed at no size
2.2 uF 10 19 27 24 0603B225K100 Match at all four sizes
2.7 uF 0 0 0 0 none Mismatch — listed at no size
3.3 uF 0 1 14 8 1206B335K160 Match at three sizes; one part at 0805, 0805B335M6R3

6.8 uF 0 0 0 0 none Mismatch — listed at no size
8.2 uF 0 0 0 0 none Mismatch — listed at no size

The surviving values read 1.0, 1.5, 2.2, 3.3 and 4.7. That is the E6 list with 1.5 in it and 6.8 out. The export lists no reason for the choice, and we do not offer one.

Which E12 steps above 1 uF does no X7R case size list?

Six of twelve, at all five sizes. We checked every E12 mantissa against every size in the 1 to 10 uF decade. 1.2, 1.8, 2.7, 5.6, 6.8 and 8.2 uF have no X7R part number at 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206 or 1210, and 3.9 uF has exactly one, 1206B395K250. A 1210 part at 2.5 uF, 1210B255K101, sits on no E12 or E24 step at all.

Above 10 uF the list is shorter again. We found 10 uF at 0805 on 7 part numbers (0805B106K100), 10 and 22 uF at 1206 on 21 and 9 (ST31B106K250, MG31B226K100), and 10, 22 and 47 uF at 1210 on 28, 21 and 5 (MT32B106J500, MG32B226K250, MG32B476K100). Nothing at 0402 or 0603 reaches 10 uF in X7R. The lower decades are not clean in the other direction either: the full ladder still carries off-series values, 14 at 0603 between 100 pF and 1 nF alone, which 310 of 1,586 twenty-percent MLCC outside E6 already measured by tolerance.

Does the 0402 X7R ladder break at the same value as the larger sizes?

No, it breaks a decade early. The 0402 is 12 of 12 for 100 pF to 100 nF, three decades, and then holds 4 of 12 between 100 nF and 1 uF. The four steps are 100, 220, 330 and 470 nF, on 36, 11, 3 and 6 part numbers; 120, 150, 180, 270, 390, 560, 680 and 820 nF are listed at 0402 on none.

The 0402 range ends at 1 uF, a single value on 3 part numbers, 0402B105K6R3 among them. A reader choosing between 0402 and 0603 for a 150 nF decoupling value therefore changes more than the footprint: 0603 lists 150 nF on 26 part numbers and 0402 on none. The reverse also holds. The 0603 lists all 12 steps through 820 nF, so a BOM at 0603 and below 1 uF will never find a hole, and a BOM at 0402 above 100 nF will find eight in twelve.

Is the gap above 1 uF a tolerance effect?

No, we checked. A tolerance rule would explain the missing 1.2 uF if the parts above 1 uF were all plus or minus 20 percent, because E6 is the 20 percent list. They are not. In the 1 to 10 uF decade at 0805, 1206 and 1210 the plus or minus 10 percent parts number 36, 59 and 47, the plus or minus 20 percent parts 23, 26 and 19, and the plus or minus 5 percent parts 16, 22 and 14.

The tolerance mix above 1 uF therefore looks like the mix below it. The gap is in the values, not in the tolerance letter. A plus or minus 10 percent part at 1.2 uF would be perfectly regular on the E12 list. The export has none, and the datasheet we hold does not say why. We hold 28 Walsin datasheets, 451 pages, and none states a rule for which capacitance steps are offered, so we do not claim one.

What should a BOM do when the E12 value it wants is not listed?

Move to the nearest listed step and re-derate at the new value, in this order. The first check is whether the missing value is a design choice or a library default: a 1.2 uF part that arrived from a vendor library is replaceable with 1.0 or 1.5 uF. The second is voltage: our DC bias and voltage derating post covers why capacitance at the working voltage is what counts. The third is the case size, because the ladder differs by size.

  1. Paste the capacitance, case size and voltage into the free cross-reference tool. It states differences from your original rather than hiding them.
  2. If the exact step is absent, test the neighbours. At 0805, 1.0 and 1.5 uF are listed and 1.2 uF is not.
  3. Check what is physically on the shelf. Hong Kong stock is a dated snapshot, 1,125 part numbers as at 23 September 2026, on the ready-stock page.

Qualification stays with you. The MLCC range page lists the series.

The short version

We parsed 5,668 Walsin X7R part numbers at five case sizes. Four of them, 0603 to 1210, list all 12 E12 steps in each of four decades, 192 of 192, up to 1 uF. The 1 to 10 uF decade lists 3, 5, 6 and 5 of 12. 1.2, 1.8, 2.7, 5.6, 6.8 and 8.2 uF have no part at any size; 3.9 uF has one. The 0402 breaks a decade early, at 100 nF, with 4 of 12. The gap is not a tolerance effect. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

Send us the capacitance, size and voltage lines from your BOM and we will tell you which are listed, which have a neighbour and which have neither. And a question back: how many of your X7R values above 1 uF are on the drawing because the circuit needs them, and how many because a library once offered them?

Frequently asked questions

Does Walsin list every E12 value for X7R MLCC?

Not above 1 uF. At 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210 every decade from 100 pF to 1 uF lists all 12 E12 steps. The 1 to 10 uF decade lists 3, 5, 6 and 5 of 12 at those sizes, and 1.2, 1.8, 2.7, 5.6, 6.8 and 8.2 uF are listed at none of five sizes.

Which X7R capacitance values above 1 uF does Walsin list?

1.0, 2.2 and 4.7 uF at 0603. The 0805, 1206 and 1210 add 1.5 uF, and 3.3 uF is listed on 1 part at 0805, 14 at 1206 and 8 at 1210. One further part at 1206 is 3.9 uF. Past 10 uF the list is 10 uF at 0805, 10 and 22 uF at 1206, and 10, 22 and 47 uF at 1210.

Is a 1.2 uF X7R MLCC available from Walsin?

Not in the export we parsed. We checked 0402, 0603, 0805, 1206 and 1210 and found no X7R part at 1.2 uF at any of them. Neighbouring steps at 1.0 and, at three sizes, 1.5 uF are listed. Check the neighbour against your derating rule and confirm against the datasheet.

Why does the 0402 X7R ladder stop earlier than 0603?

The export does not say. We counted 4 of 12 E12 steps between 100 nF and 1 uF at 0402 against 12 of 12 at 0603, and a single value, 1 uF on 3 part numbers, above it. The 0402 range ends at 1 uF. We hold no datasheet statement of a step rule.

Does tolerance explain the missing capacitance steps?

No. In the 1 to 10 uF decade the plus or minus 10 percent parts are the largest group at 0805, 1206 and 1210, on 36, 59 and 47 part numbers, so the missing steps are not simply the plus or minus 20 percent E6 list. A 10 percent part at 1.2 uF would be regular and none is listed.

Is this the same in every Walsin dielectric?

We measured X7R only. The NP0 and X5R ladders have their own gaps and ceilings, and X5R in particular holds far fewer parts, 733 across all sizes. Do not read this count across to another dielectric; run the same test on the code in your BOM.

Does the export list a datasheet limit for the capacitance range?

For X7R the datasheet we hold states a capacitance range per size. We did not reconcile every step against it here. Request the sheet for your series; we hold 28 datasheets, 451 pages, none for thin film, inductor, varistor, disc, RF or antenna lines.
