Electronics Assembly in Mexico: With Computer Exports Past Cars and USMCA on Annual Review, 31 of 764 Stocked Walsin MLCC Lines Have a Thinner Twin, and Only 1 of the 31 Twins Is on the Shelf

Electronics assembly in Mexico now sends more computers than cars to the United States, and board height is a quiet limit. Of our 764 stocked Walsin MLCC lines, 31 have a thinner Walsin twin at the same size, dielectric, capacitance, tolerance and voltage. Only 1 of the 31 twins is on the shelf.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin Technology (Walsin) MLCC export of 24,026 rows, 23,601 of them distinct part numbers. This post is for a design engineer or buyer at an electronics assembler or contract manufacturer in Mexico who wants to know what a Hong Kong source can offer when a board has a height budget. Every part number below is real and every count is ours. Where it states a trade fact, it names the source, the date and the day we read it.

What changed for electronics assembly in Mexico in 2025 and 2026?

Computers overtook cars in Mexico’s sales to the United States. The Wilson Center reported on 24 August 2026 that in 2025 United States imports of computer equipment from Mexico passed passenger vehicles for the first time, and that computer equipment exports to the United States grew 349% from 2017 against 48% for autos. We read the article on 22 October 2026.

The same article, by Luisa Blanco, looks at Chihuahua. It reports that computer and electronics rose from 45% of that state’s exports in 2024 to 60% in 2025, that the state’s total exports grew 45% over the year, and that the electronics clusters in Juárez and Chihuahua are moving toward semiconductors, integrated circuits, processors and networking equipment. It labels the 2025 state figures preliminary. It ties the growth to the advantage that USMCA-compliant Mexican exports held over the steep 2025 tariffs.

Our view, labelled as ours: a plant that moves from car modules to computing and networking boards meets a different component profile, with more small case sizes, lower voltages and tighter height limits. The article does not say that.

What does the USMCA review change for a component buyer?

It keeps the agreement in force while leaving its future open, which makes a second source and a dated stock view worth having. At the first joint review on 1 July 2026 the United States did not agree to renew the USMCA in its current form, so the parties move to annual reviews, and the agreement stays in force until 1 July 2036, per the International Institute for Sustainable Development on 9 September 2026.

The same source says Mexico and Canada each backed a 16-year extension and that the extension can still be confirmed at any time. The United States Trade Representative’s joint statement of 23 July 2026 records the third bilateral round, held in Mexico City, covering economic security, labor, agriculture, electronic payment services, steel and aluminum, and automobiles. It directed the fourth round to Washington in September 2026. We found no report of that round’s result by 22 October 2026.

Three limits on what we say. First, we give no legal, customs or tariff advice, and rules-of-origin treatment of any board is a question for your compliance team. Second, none of the 28 Walsin datasheets we hold names a manufacturing site, so we state no country of origin for any part. Third, we hold no tariff or origin document for Walsin parts. What we can offer a Mexican assembler is a documented cross-reference, a dated Hong Kong stock list and small lots.

Why does MLCC height matter on a Mexican assembly line?

Because height decides whether a capacitor fits under a shield, a heat spreader or a thin enclosure. We parsed the thickness field of all 23,601 distinct MLCC part numbers: 23,136 carry a numeric height and 465 carry none, and the heights run from 0.20 mm to 3.10 mm. The same footprint can come in several heights.

A size code such as 0805 fixes length and width, not height. A 10 µF, 6.3 V X5R capacitor in 0805 can be 1.25 mm tall in the general purpose series, and Walsin’s TT low profile series lists the same electrical values at 0.85 mm. The Walsin low profile datasheet, revision April 2026, is one of the 28 we hold. Our post on the TT low profile series explains what the series changes, and the thickness symbol post shows how the export encodes height.

Our view: if your board has a height budget, the question to ask a source is not whether the capacitance exists, it is whether a thinner part exists at the same electrical values and whether it is on the shelf.

How many stocked Walsin MLCC lines have a thinner twin?

31 of 764. We matched each stocked MLCC line that has a height to the export on size, dielectric, capacitance, tolerance and rated voltage, and counted those with a thinner Walsin part: 31 of 764, of which 24 are 0805, 4 are 1206, 2 are 0402 and 1 is 0603.

The 31 twins sit in these series: 11 in the automotive MT series, 10 in the TT low profile series, 6 in the middle and high voltage series, and 4 spread over feed-through, soft termination, microwave RF and general purpose. We have not seen this counted anywhere: only 1 of the 31 twins is itself in our 23 September 2026 stock list, so for 30 of the 31 a thinner part is a factory order, not a shelf item. We read the export’s nominal height; maximum height can differ, and our post on height tolerance explains why.

Stocked part Size, dielectric, capacitance, voltage Height (export) Thinner Walsin part Its height Twin on shelf? Match / mismatch
0805X106K6R3 0805, X5R, 10 µF, 6.3 V 1.25 ± 0.20 mm TT21X106K6R3 0.85 ± 0.10 mm No Match on size, dielectric, capacitance, tolerance and voltage; mismatch on series and height

0805B474K160 0805, X7R, 470 nF, 16 V 1.25 ± 0.10 mm FT21B474K160 0.85 ± 0.10 mm No Mismatch: a feed-through part with three terminals, so the pad and circuit role differ
SH21B103K201 0805, X7R, 10 nF, 200 V 1.25 ± 0.10 mm 0805B103K201 0.80 ± 0.10 mm Yes Match on the five fields; mismatch on termination, since the stocked part is soft termination

The feed-through row is why the count is a starting list and not a substitution list. A part can pass a five-field filter and still be the wrong component. Check termination, series and layout against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

What do we hold in stock and in documents for computing boards?

A stock list of 1,125 part numbers and 28 Walsin datasheets, none of which names a laptop, notebook, server, router or smartphone. We opened all 28 datasheets, 451 pages: the word computer appears in 3, once for computer motherboards in the feed-through sheet and twice as a listed application in the two chip resistor sheets, and laptop, notebook, server, router, networking, smartphone and tablet appear in none.

That is a statement about what the documents say, not about what the parts can do. We make no claim that any part is suited to a computing product, and none of the datasheets we hold is a qualification report for one. The stock list is a dated snapshot of 23 September 2026 and moves. The ready stock page shows what is held in Hong Kong now, and we quote part-number counts, never piece counts. Venatech holds neither ISO 9001 nor ISO 13485, and we say so plainly.

How can Venatech help a Mexico electronics assembler?

By crossing the capacitor you already use, stating the differences, and telling you what is missing. Venatech Limited is an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong. Walsin is our only authorised line, and the other lines we supply are Stackpole and Viking.

  • Cross-reference. Paste your incumbent number into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, and read each Walsin candidate with match and mismatch stated field by field, including the thickness field.
  • BOM check. Upload a board’s bill of materials to /bom/ and have each line checked against the same engine.
  • Ready stock. The ready stock list is a Hong Kong snapshot dated 23 September 2026, never live-synced.
  • Service. Hong Kong-based, small lots, cross-referencing help, and a quote requested through the site. Our address is Unit 207, 2/F, Sun Ling Plaza, 30 On Kui Street, Fanling, N.T., Hong Kong, telephone (852) 2628 4777.

A worked example from our own export: a 10 µF, 6.3 V, X5R capacitor in 0805 at 1.25 mm is the stocked 0805X106K6R3. If the board needs 0.85 mm, the candidate is TT21X106K6R3, which is not stocked, so it is a factory order. Our MLCC range lists the families. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

The short version

Computers passed cars in Mexico’s sales to the United States in 2025, per the Wilson Center on 24 August 2026, and the USMCA moved to annual reviews after 1 July 2026. For a board with a height budget, 31 of our 764 stocked MLCC lines have a thinner Walsin part at the same five fields, and only 1 of the 31 twins is on the shelf. None of the 28 datasheets we hold names a laptop, server or router.

Send us one capacitor from a height-limited board and we will return the Walsin parts with the differences stated. When your enclosure loses half a millimetre, which gives way first, the capacitance or the schedule?

Frequently asked questions

Are computers now a bigger Mexican export to the United States than cars?

For imports in 2025, yes, per the Wilson Center on 24 August 2026: United States imports of computer equipment from Mexico passed passenger vehicles for the first time. The same article puts computer equipment export growth at 349% from 2017, against 48% for autos. It is one think-tank source, so check the underlying trade data.

Is the USMCA still in force after the July 2026 review?

Yes. At the 1 July 2026 joint review the United States did not agree to renew it in its current form, and the parties moved to annual reviews. The International Institute for Sustainable Development says the agreement stays in force until 1 July 2036. We give no legal advice. Ask your compliance team.

How many of your stocked MLCC lines have a thinner Walsin twin?

31 of 764. We matched size, dielectric, capacitance, tolerance and rated voltage against the Walsin export. 24 are 0805, and 10 of the 31 have a twin in the TT low profile series. Only 1 of the 31 twins is itself in the 23 September 2026 stock list.

Is a thinner twin a drop-in replacement?

No. A twin matches five fields, and the series, termination and layout can still differ. One of our 31 is a feed-through part with three terminals. Compare both datasheets field by field and qualify in your own circuit. The cross-reference tool states each match and mismatch.

Do you hold datasheets for laptop or server boards?

No. None of the 28 Walsin datasheets we hold, 451 pages, contains the words laptop, notebook, server, router, networking, smartphone or tablet. The word computer appears in 3. We make no claim that a part suits a computing product, and qualification stays with you.

Can you tell me the country of origin of a Walsin part?

No. None of the documents we hold names a manufacturing site, so we state no country of origin. If origin affects your rules-of-origin position under the USMCA, take that question to your compliance team. We offer lot and date-code traceability and a certificate of conformity per shipment on request.
