Smart Meter Electronics for Canada from Hong Kong: 2,228 Walsin Thin-Film Resistors Span 100 Kilohm to 1 Megohm in 0805 and 1206, All at One Listed Tolerance and None on Our Shelf

Smart meter electronics for Canada live or die on a few precision resistors, and the data behind them is stranger than the radio. We parsed the Walsin Technology (Walsin) thin-film export: 2,228 parts span 100 kilohm to 1 megohm in 0805 and 1206, all listed at one tolerance, and none is on our Hong Kong shelf as at 23 September 2026.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin chip resistor and thin-film exports and a stock list dated 23 September 2026. This post is for a design or procurement engineer at a Canadian meter maker, or a contract manufacturer building meters for a Canadian utility, who has a voltage-divider or reference resistor on a bill of materials and an incumbent part number to cross. Every part number is real, every count is ours, and every news item names its source and the day we fetched it, 23 October 2026.

What is happening with smart meter rollouts in Canada?

Two utilities show the pace. Maritime Electric on Prince Edward Island is converting about 90,000 customers, with roughly 1,300 pole-mounted data collectors nearing completion as of mid-July 2026 and full Island-wide deployment targeted for 2027; the City of Red Deer began replacing meters in the week of 25 May 2026 and expects six to eight months of neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood work.

The detail, from the sources we fetched. A news article dated 14 July 2026, summarising a broadcaster report of 13 July, says Phase One installations on Prince Edward Island began in November 2025, that the meters talk to the network at 15-minute intervals, and that they offer two-way communication, remote connect and disconnect, tamper and fault alerts and remote firmware updates. A City of Red Deer news release dated 25 May 2026 says each replacement takes about ten minutes and a short power interruption, that the city’s present metering system is ageing, and that parts for it are getting harder to find. The release gives no meter count.

We draw one conclusion, and it is ours: multi-year rollouts mean a meter design is frozen early and built for years, so the resistor you cross today is the one a procurement team must still be able to buy in 2027. We have no relationship with either utility and know nothing about which meters they chose.

What does a metering front end ask of a resistor?

Stability first, because a meter is a measurement instrument. In our own view, the resistors that matter most in a meter are the voltage-divider arms and reference parts, where tolerance and temperature coefficient set the error budget, and Walsin lists 16,412 thin-film WF precision rows in 0805 and 1206 that we parsed one by one.

We counted by opening every file in the Walsin thin-film export folder. Of the 8 WF precision files, the 0805 and 1206 files hold 7,985 and 8,427 rows, and the Tolerance field reads plus or minus 0.01 percent on every one of the 16,412 rows. Between 100 kilohm and 1 megohm there are 2,228 rows: 1,069 in 0805 and 1,159 in 1206. We have not seen this counted anywhere. It means a brief written at plus or minus 0.1 percent crosses to a tighter part on tolerance, and the tolerance will never be the field that separates two candidates; temperature coefficient and rated power will.

The temperature-coefficient letter in the part number does the separating. At exactly 100 kilohm the export shows 7 rows in 0805 and 8 in 1206, with coefficients listed from 3 to 50 parts per million per degree and rated powers of one tenth, one eighth or one quarter of a watt.

Which Walsin thin-film parts cross a 100 kilohm, 0805, 0.1 percent brief?

One part matches on the fields that decide, and it is not on our shelf. Take an 0805, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 0.1 percent, 25 parts per million, one-eighth watt brief: WF08R1003TTL matches on size, value, coefficient and power, with a tighter listed tolerance, and four neighbours differ in coefficient, power, size or tolerance.

Walsin part Size, value, tolerance, coefficient, power On shelf 23 Sep 2026 Match / mismatch with the brief Your incumbent
WF08R1003TTL 0805, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 0.01%, 25 ppm or better, 1/8 W No Match on size, value, coefficient and power; mismatch: tolerance tighter
WF08F1003TTL 0805, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 0.01%, 15 ppm or better, 1/8 W No Mismatch: coefficient and tolerance tighter; size, value, power match
WF08U1003TTL 0805, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 0.01%, 25 ppm or better, 1/10 W No Mismatch: rated power lower than the brief
WF12R1003TTL 1206, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 0.01%, 25 ppm or better, 1/4 W No Mismatch: larger body, higher rated power
WR08X1003FTL 0805, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 1%, 100 ppm, 1/8 W (thick film) Yes Mismatch: tolerance and coefficient looser; size, value, power match

All five rows are the export’s own fields. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit; for thin film we hold no datasheet at all, which the last section explains.

What does a Hong Kong shelf hold at 100 kilohm?

Four lines, none of them thin film. Our stock list as at 23 September 2026 holds 183 chip resistor part numbers that match the export, and exactly four of them are 100 kilohm: WR04X1003FTL, WR06X1003FTL, WR08X1003FTL and WR12X1003FTL, all thick film at plus or minus 1 percent and 100 parts per million; of the thin-film WF files, 0 part numbers are on the shelf.

That is an honest answer for a meter team: if your brief is a precision divider, the shelf is no help today and the route is a quote for the thin-film part. If the 100 kilohm is a pull-up or a bias resistor that does not need precision, the shelf may serve. Stock moves; the ready stock list is a dated snapshot, never live-synced. Our posts on thin film versus thick film chip resistors and on precision thin-film tolerance and temperature coefficient cover the trade, and the thin-film range lists the families.

What do we not know about thin-film voltage rating and approvals?

Quite a lot, and we say so. Of the 28 datasheets we hold, 0 cover a thin-film part, the thin-film export has no working-voltage column in any of its 9 fields, and we make no claim that any Walsin part is suitable for a revenue meter or accepted by any Canadian measurement authority.

A divider across a mains-derived voltage needs a working-voltage figure, and we cannot give you one from the export. Ask us for the Walsin sheet; it is on our request list and not in the documents we hold. Our locations are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Singapore and Jiangmen, with Chengdu in preparation, and we hold no office or stock in Canada. We give no legal, customs or conformity advice; confirm with your compliance team. Qualification stays with you.

How Venatech helps

Paste your incumbent into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, and read the Walsin candidates with each field marked match or mismatch. Load a whole BOM, up to 500 part numbers or an Excel or CSV file, to run every line. The ready-stock list is a Hong Kong snapshot dated 23 September 2026, never live. Worked example from our own export: the 100 kilohm, 0805 and 1206 thin-film filter above returned 15 rows across the WF files and 2,228 rows across the whole 100 kilohm to 1 megohm band, and the shelf covers none of them but four thick-film neighbours. Walsin is the only line we are authorised for; Stackpole and Viking are lines we supply. We serve from Hong Kong in small lots, we help with cross-referencing by hand when the tool returns no clean candidate, and a quote is requested through the site. The 28 datasheets, 451 pages, we hold are sent on request.

The short version

For a Canadian meter team, the question is not whether a precision resistor exists but whether you can see its documentation and stock: 2,228 thin-film parts sit in the 100 kilohm to 1 megohm band at 0805 and 1206, every one at the same listed tolerance, and 0 are on our shelf. The cross is easy and the voltage-rating evidence is the gap you have to close.

Send us one divider arm from your BOM and we will return the Walsin candidates with the differences stated and the shelf position named. If a rollout runs to 2027, how long does your approved-vendor list hold a thin-film part you cannot yet document?
