The Smallest Walsin Inductors: 0201 and 0402 Chip Inductors

Walsin Technology (Walsin)’s smallest catalogued chip inductor size, 0603 metric /
0201 imperial, tops out at 100 nH across all 888 parts, every one of them exactly 0.3 mm
thick.
The next size up, 1005 metric / 0402 imperial, reaches 150 nH — but only one part
number out of 1,001 true inductors gets there, and only 25 reach 100 nH or above. Most of
the 0402 catalogue sits well under that ceiling.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds Walsin’s full
5,410-row inductor parametric export. Venatech holds no Walsin inductor datasheet PDF, and
208 parts across the VEFL, WIP, SCM, SCA and BIH series have no datasheet at all. Confirm every figure below against
Walsin’s own documentation before design-in. Every part number is real.

What is Walsin’s smallest catalogued chip inductor size?

0603 metric, labelled 0201 in the imperial case code Walsin prints alongside it — not to be
confused with the 0603 imperial code, which is a different, larger part. Walsin’s Size
column writes it as 0603(0201), matching the same metric-first, imperial-in-parentheses
convention used across the catalogue. 888 real part numbers sit at this size, across three
series: WLCM (367), MCI (349) and MCI-TM (172).

How much inductance can you get at 0201?

Up to 100 nH, and no further. All 888 parts at 0603(0201) are specified in nH — none in
µH — and the maximum value in the export is exactly 100 nH, held by WLCM0603Z0JR10TB.
Thickness carries zero variation across the entire size: every one of the 888 rows reads
0.3 mm.

Size Parts Thickness range Inductance range Max inductance
0603(0201) 888 0.3 mm (fixed) 0.3–100 nH 100 nH

A design that needs more than 100 nH in any form cannot be met at this footprint anywhere
in Walsin’s inductor line, regardless of series.

How much inductance can you get at 0402?

Up to 150 nH, but that ceiling is held by exactly one part number. 1,001 of the 1,091 rows
at 1005(0402) are true inductors specified in nH; the other 90 are ferrite bead parts
specified in Ω, covered below. Among the 1,001 true inductors, thickness takes three
distinct values rather than one:

Thickness (mm) Parts
0.30 4
0.50 366
0.66 631
Part number Series Inductance Thickness Match / mismatch
WLCM1005Z0JR15TB WLCM 150 nH 0.50 mm Mismatch — only part above 120 nH
WQCW1005Z0JR12TP WQCW 120 nH 0.66 mm Match — second-highest tier
MCI1005HQR12JHBP MCI 120 nH 0.50 mm Match — second-highest tier
WCI1005CPR12G WCI 120 nH 0.66 mm Match — second-highest tier
WCA1005CPR12G WCA 120 nH 0.66 mm Match — second-highest tier

Only 25 of the 1,001 true 0402 inductors reach 100 nH or above at all — the rest, 97.5% of
the size, sit below that line. The median inductance across the size is 8.7 nH, far below
the single-part 150 nH ceiling.

Which Walsin series are available at these two sizes?

Size Series present
0603(0201) WLCM (367), MCI (349), MCI-TM (172)
1005(0402), true inductors WCI (174), WCA (174), WQCW (149), WLCW (134), WLCM (134), MCI (119), MCI Automotive (113), MHC-S (4)
1005(0402), ferrite beads MCB-S (23), MCB / MHC Automotive (23), WLBD(HC) (14), WLBD (12), WQBD (8), MCB-H (6), MCB-B (4)

0402 offers far more series choice than 0201 — eight true-inductor series against three —
which is worth knowing if a 0201 design needs to migrate up one size for second-sourcing
within the Walsin line itself.

Why does the 0402 size also show parts rated in ohms, not henries?

Because 90 of the 1,091 rows at 1005(0402) are ferrite bead parts, not inductors. Walsin’s
MCB and MHC bead families — covered in Walsin automotive inductors: MCB, MHC and
MCI
— specify impedance at 100 MHz in ohms
rather than inductance in henries, and the Inductance column reads 0.0 on every one of
them. A query that assumes every row at 1005(0402) is an inductance value will silently
mix 90 impedance-rated parts into the result.

Shielded vs unshielded chip inductors. The
full catalogue is on the Walsin inductor page.

The short version

0603(0201) is a flat, narrow shelf: 888 parts, one thickness, a 100 nH ceiling. 1005(0402)
offers more series and a nominally higher 150 nH ceiling, but that ceiling is a single part
number, and 97.5% of the size’s true inductors sit below 100 nH. Ninety more rows at the
same nominal size are ferrite beads, not inductors at all, and need to be filtered out
before any inductance comparison.

Send us your target inductance and we will tell you which real Walsin part numbers at
0201 or 0402 can actually reach it, and which series offers the most second-source
options.

Already holding a part number? Paste it into the cross-reference tool — it reads the manufacturer from the number itself, returns the Walsin inductor candidates and states every field that differs rather than calling anything an alternative. Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest chip inductor size in Walsin’s catalogue?

0603 metric, labelled 0201 imperial, at 888 real part numbers across the WLCM, MCI and MCI-TM series.

What is the maximum inductance available at Walsin’s 0201 size?

100 nH, held by WLCM0603Z0JR10TB. All 888 parts at this size are specified in nanohenries, and every one is exactly 0.3 mm thick.

What is the maximum inductance available at Walsin’s 0402 size?

150 nH, held by a single part number, WLCM1005Z0JR15TB. Only 25 of the 1,001 true inductors at this size reach 100 nH or above.

Does 0402 come in more than one thickness?

Yes. Unlike 0201, which is uniformly 0.3 mm, the 0402 size spans three thicknesses: 0.30 mm (4 parts), 0.50 mm (366 parts) and 0.66 mm (631 parts).

Why do some 0402-size Walsin parts show a value in ohms instead of nanohenries?

Because 90 of the 1,091 rows at that nominal size are ferrite bead parts from the MCB and MHC families, specified by impedance at 100 MHz rather than by inductance.

How many series does Walsin offer at 0402 versus 0201?

Eight true-inductor series at 0402 against three at 0201, plus seven more bead-only series at 0402 that have no counterpart at 0201.

Is 150 nH a hard physical ceiling for Walsin’s 0402 case size?

We cannot confirm that from the parametric export alone — it is the highest value Walsin has chosen to list, held by exactly one part number. Ask Walsin whether higher-inductance 0402 parts exist outside this export before assuming the ceiling is absolute.
