X7R MLCC Height vs Capacitance: A 0805 Tops Out at 120 nF at 0.80 mm and Reaches 10 uF at 1.25 mm

X7R MLCC height vs capacitance is a steep trade. We read the nominal height of 5,668 Walsin X7R part numbers: at 0805 the 0.80 mm parts reach 120 nF and the 1.25 mm parts reach 10 uF, 83 times more. Of 374 parts at 1 uF or more from 0805 to 1210, only 5 are 1.0 mm or lower.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the combined MLCC export published by Walsin Technology (Walsin): 24,026 rows, 23,601 distinct part numbers. This post is written from that file, 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx. We took the X7R dielectric at five case sizes, parsed the nominal value out of the T thickness string, and found the highest capacitance at each height. Every part number below is real. Nominal height is the number a library stores; the maximum height is a separate matter, covered in one nominal height, four maximum heights.

How much capacitance does an extra 0.45 mm of height buy at 0805?

83 times as much. We grouped the 1,460 X7R part numbers in 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx at 0805 that state a thickness by nominal height and read the highest capacitance in each group. The 0.80 mm group, 817 parts, tops out at 120 nF; the 1.25 mm group, 628 parts, reaches 10 uF. Between them sits a 0.85 mm group of 10 parts that reaches 4.7 uF.

X7R at 0805, nominal height Parts Highest capacitance Real part Series in the group Match / mismatch against a 1 uF need under a 1.0 mm nominal limit
0.60 mm 5 3.3 nF 0805B332K500 GP 4, MG 1 Mismatch — fits the height, ceiling far below 1 uF
0.80 mm 817 120 nF MT21B124K100 GP, MVH, MT, MG, SH, ST Mismatch — fits the height, ceiling 120 nF
0.85 mm 10 4.7 uF TT21B475K100 FT 7, TT 3 Match — 4 parts reach 1 uF or more
1.25 mm 628 10 uF 0805B106K100 SH, GP, MVH, MT, MG, SG, ST Mismatch — reaches 10 uF, fails the height

We have not seen this counted anywhere. The 0.05 mm that separates 0.80 from 0.85 mm separates a 120 nF ceiling from a 4.7 uF ceiling, 39 times, and the 0.85 mm group is 10 parts, 7 of them feed-through. A feed-through part has three terminations and is not a pad-for-pad swap for a two-terminal chip.

Does the capacitance ceiling always rise with height?

Not at 1206. We checked every height group at 1206 and 1210 against the next one up. At 1206 the six groups run 0.80, 0.85, 0.95, 1.15, 1.25 and 1.60 mm. The ceiling goes 150 nF, 1 uF, 390 nF, 2.2 uF, 10 uF and 22 uF, so the 0.85 mm group beats the 0.95 mm group by 2.6 times while being 0.10 mm lower.

X7R at 1206 and 1210, nominal height Parts Highest capacitance Real part Match / mismatch against the next lower group’s ceiling

1210, 2.50 mm 172 47 uF MG32B476K100 Match — 4.7 times

At 1210 the ceiling climbs 100 times over 1.55 mm, from 470 nF to 47 uF, and each step multiplies it by 2.1, 3.3, 3.0 and 4.7. The ceilings above run across all voltages. We re-ran the 0805 and 1206 groups at 16 V and 25 V only, and the order held: 120 nF, 2.2 uF and 10 uF at 0805, and 120 nF, 1 uF, 330 nF, 2.2 uF, 10 uF and 22 uF at 1206.

How many X7R parts at 1 uF or more fit under 1.0 mm?

51 of 420, and only 5 above 0603. We filtered the 5,668 X7R part numbers in 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx to those at 1 uF or more and then to a nominal height of 1.0 mm or lower. 420 parts reach 1 uF; 51 of them are 1.0 mm or lower, and 46 of those 51 are 0402 or 0603. At 0805, 1206 and 1210 together, 374 parts reach 1 uF and 5 are under 1.0 mm, 1.3 percent.

Case size X7R parts At 1 uF or more At 1 uF or more and 1.0 mm or lower Real part Match / mismatch against a 1 uF, 1.0 mm requirement
0402 781 3 3 0402B105K6R3 Match — 3 parts, all 1 uF at 6.3 V
0603 1,276 43 43 0603B225K100 Match — 43 parts, up to 4.7 uF
0805 1,460 88 4 TT21B225K160 Match on 4 parts; 84 fail the height
1206 1,453 145 1 TT31B105K250 Match on one part; 144 fail the height
1210 698 141 0 none Mismatch — no part meets both

The four 0805 parts are FT21B105M160, TT21B225K250, TT21B225K160 and TT21B475K100. Two series produce all five of the 0805 and 1206 parts: low profile TT and feed-through FT. The low-profile family is covered in the TT series post.

Which case sizes have only one height?

For X7R, three of the five, and 0201 for every dielectric. We counted the distinct values in the T column of 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx for each case size. 0201 has one, 0.30 mm, on all 2,511 parts that state a thickness. 0402 has three, but 3,932 of 3,937, 99.9 percent, are 0.50 mm. 0603 has two, and 4,645 of 4,664, 99.6 percent, are 0.80 mm.

For X7R the picture is cleaner still: all 282 X7R parts at 0201 are 0.30 mm, all 781 at 0402 are 0.50 mm and all 1,276 at 0603 are 0.80 mm. At those sizes height is a case-size property and a height filter does nothing. It starts to discriminate at 0805. For the code that carries the thickness on the part number, see 26 thickness letters, 16 thicknesses.

How many parts share each height at the busy case sizes?

Fewer than half share any one, at the sizes where height matters. We counted all dielectrics, not just X7R, in the T column at each size. At 0805 the largest height group, 0.80 mm, holds 1,553 of 4,710 parts, 33.0 percent, and the next three hold 1,333, 1,198 and 626. At 1206 the 0.80 mm group holds 1,590 of 3,278, 48.5 percent, and at 1210 the 0.95 mm group holds 520 of 1,304, 39.9 percent.

Case size Parts with a thickness Distinct nominal heights Largest group Share Match / mismatch against “one height per size”
0201 2,511 1 0.30 mm 100% Match
0603 4,664 2 0.80 mm 99.6% Match, 19 parts at 0.50 mm
0805 4,710 4 0.80 mm 33.0% Mismatch
1206 3,278 6 0.80 mm 48.5% Mismatch
1210 1,304 6 0.95 mm 39.9% Mismatch

465 of the 23,601 part numbers in 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx state no thickness we could parse and are left out of every count above. Each low profile part above is a TT or FT series row; the series names come from the same file, and the stock position of any of them is the dated snapshot of 23 September 2026.

How should a height budget be checked against this table?

Start with the ceiling at your height, then check the maximum. The sequence is short: find the height rung your drawing allows, read the ceiling for that rung at your case size, and only then look for the part. If your capacitance sits above the ceiling, the options are a lower-height series, a larger case size, or a design change.

  1. Use nominal height to shortlist and maximum height to approve. The nominal figure in this post is the shortlist number.
  2. Paste the capacitance, size and height into the free cross-reference tool and read the differences it states.
  3. Check the shelf. Hong Kong stock is a dated snapshot, 1,125 part numbers as at 23 September 2026, on the ready-stock page.

The MLCC range page lists the series. We hold 28 Walsin datasheets, 451 pages, and the approval sheet for the series, not 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx, states the maximum height.

The short version

We parsed 5,668 Walsin X7R part numbers. At 0805 the ceiling is 120 nF at 0.80 mm, 4.7 uF at 0.85 mm and 10 uF at 1.25 mm. At 1206 the 0.85 mm group, one part, beats the 0.95 mm group. At 1210 the ceiling rises 100 times over 1.55 mm. Of 374 parts at 1 uF or more from 0805 to 1210, 5 are 1.0 mm or lower. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

Send us the capacitance, case size and height limit from your drawing and we will tell you which rung you are on. And a question back: when your library says a part is 0.85 mm tall, was that the nominal, and who checked the maximum?

How much capacitance can a 0805 X7R MLCC reach at 0.80 mm?

Up to 120 nF. We read the nominal height of 817 Walsin X7R part numbers at 0805 and 0.80 mm, and the highest capacitance is 120 nF, MT21B124K100. At 1.25 mm, 628 parts reach 10 uF. The ceiling is across all voltages.

Is there a 1 uF X7R MLCC under 1 mm at 1206?

One, in the export we parsed: TT31B105K250, a low profile TT part at 0.85 mm nominal and 25 V. Of 145 X7R parts at 1 uF or more at 1206, the other 144 are taller. Check the maximum height on the approval sheet before design-in.

Does a taller MLCC always have a higher capacitance ceiling?

Not within the 1206 data. The 0.85 mm group, one part, reaches 1 uF, while the 0.95 mm group of 65 parts reaches 390 nF. The 0.85 mm part is from the low profile TT series. Across the larger groups, the ceiling rises with height.

Which Walsin MLCC case sizes have only one height?

0201, at 0.30 mm on all 2,511 parts that state a thickness. 0402 is 99.9 percent at 0.50 mm and 0603 is 99.6 percent at 0.80 mm. For X7R the three sizes have exactly one height each. A height filter starts to discriminate at 0805.

What is the highest-capacitance X7R at 1210 and how tall is it?

MG32B476K100, 47 uF, at 2.50 mm nominal and 10 V. It is one of 5 X7R parts at 47 uF at 1210. The next lower group, 2.00 mm, reaches 10 uF. Check voltage derating at your working voltage, because capacitance falls under DC bias.

Is nominal height the same as maximum height?

No. The export states a nominal with a tolerance, and the maximum is the nominal plus the tolerance. At 0603 a 0.80 mm nominal names four maximum heights in our earlier count. Use the maximum from the approval sheet for the clearance check.

Does the export state height for every part?

No. 465 of 23,601 distinct part numbers state no thickness we could parse, including 141 at 1111. Those parts are excluded from every count here. Request the approval sheet for the series to read the height.
