Automotive chip resistors for Portugal are the easy half of the BOM, and the data proves it. We matched 245 stocked Walsin chip resistor lines to the export: 234 General Purpose lines each have an automotive-labelled twin on five printed fields, always the same code plus the letter J, and none of the other 11 lines does.
Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin Technology (Walsin) chip resistor export of 234,815 rows across 137 files and a stock list of 1,125 part numbers dated 23 September 2026. This post is for a purchasing or design engineer at a Portuguese automotive electronics plant or an EMS line that builds for one. We counted our own shelf against the export, and every part number below is real. Every market figure names its source and the day we read it.
What do Portugal’s vehicle and component makers report, and why does it matter to a resistor buyer?
Portugal built 341,361 vehicles in 2025, up 2.7%, and its component makers expect to export less. The Portuguese automobile association ACAP reported passenger cars at 269,468 (up 3.3%), light commercial vehicles at 68,809 (up 0.2%) and heavy vehicles at 3,084 (up 5.2%), as carried by RTP on 16 January 2026.
AFIA, the automotive industry manufacturers’ association, estimated in November 2025 that component turnover would fall to about EUR 14.2 billion from EUR 14.4 billion in 2024, and exports to about EUR 11.7 billion from EUR 12.2 billion (ECO, 6 November 2025). Its provisional report of 8 May 2026 puts January to March 2026 component exports at about EUR 3.0 billion, down 6.9%, with Spain the largest market at 28.1% of exports.
Our view, labelled as ours: a component maker exporting into a falling market tightens every approval and every cost line, so the second-source question arrives first at the resistor, where the swap is cheap to test. We hold no figure for Portuguese EMS output and name no customer.
How many stocked commercial chip resistor lines have an automotive-series twin?
We parsed all 234,815 chip resistor rows and matched 250 of our 255 stocked resistor lines to them, once the embedded spaces in Walsin’s part numbers were deleted. Five of the 250 are already in an automotive series. Of the other 245, 234 have a twin in the General Purpose Chip Resistor (Automotive) series on size, resistance, tolerance, TCR and rated power. Every one of the 234 twins is the stocked code plus the letter J.
We have not seen this stock-to-automotive match counted anywhere. The split by case size is below, and the 11 lines without a twin sit outside the General Purpose series.
| Case size | Stocked lines, non-automotive series | With an automotive General Purpose twin | Match / mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0201 | 4 | 4 | Match for all 4 on five fields |
| 0402 | 81 | 78 | Mismatch for 3 (two ±0.5% high-precision, one array) |
| 0603 | 100 | 98 | Mismatch for 2 (LF 100 ppm series lines that print a 200 ppm TCR) |
| 0805 | 30 | 26 | Mismatch for 4 (one high-precision, three current-sense) |
| 1206 | 28 | 26 | Mismatch for 2 (high-precision) |
| 2512 | 2 | 2 | Match for both on five fields |
Walsin’s datasheets for the automotive MR series say AEC-Q200 compliant, never certified. Venatech makes no qualification claim of its own, so ask for the qualification report against the exact part number. Our post on automotive chip resistors MR, SR and the AEC-Q200 split shows how the series are named.
What does one letter away mean on a real BOM line?
It means the stocked code and its twin differ by one trailing character, and nothing else in the five printed fields. We checked 234 of 234 pairs: the twin code is the stocked code plus J, and 225 of the 234 also have a second twin spelled with an MR prefix and a V suffix. The nine without it are four at 0201, three at 0402 and two at 2512.
| Stocked line | Automotive-labelled twin | Printed fields | Match / mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
WR06X1002FTL |
WR06X1002FTLJ, MR06X1002FTLV |
0603, 10 kohm, ±1%, 100 ppm, 1/10 W | Match on five fields; mismatch on series label and suffix |
WR08X1002FTL |
WR08X1002FTLJ, MR08X1002FTLV |
0805, 10 kohm, ±1%, 100 ppm, 1/8 W | Match on five fields; mismatch on series label and suffix |
WR02X1002FAL |
WR02X1002FALJ only |
0201, 10 kohm, ±1%, 200 ppm, 1/20 W | Match on five fields; mismatch: no MR-prefix twin at 0201 |
WW08WR270FTL |
none | 0805, 0.27 ohm, ±1%, 1/4 W | Mismatch: current-sense series has no General Purpose automotive twin |
WF12H1202BTL |
none | 1206, 12 kohm, ±0.1%, 1/4 W | Mismatch: high-precision series, no automotive twin on these fields |
MF12E2200FTL |
itself | 1206, 220 ohm, ±1%, 3/4 W | Match: already in the Triple Power Surge (Automotive) series |
A five-field match says the printed numbers agree. It does not say the parts are built or tested alike, and the series label is the only field that differs. We hold two Walsin resistor datasheets, an MR automotive sheet and a WR general purpose sheet, ASC_WR_V24 dated September 2016. Which sheet governs a WR part ending in J is a question for Walsin, and it is on our request list. Qualify in your own circuit.
Which 11 stocked lines have no automotive twin?
They are the lines in four other series: five high-precision TC100 lines, two LF 100 ppm lines, three low-ohm current-sense lines and one array. We counted every stocked line against the General Purpose Automotive series only. The high-precision lines are WF04H1202DTL, WF04H3302DTL, WF08H8203BTL, WF12H1202BTL and WF12H5762BTL, at ±0.5% or ±0.1%.
The two LF lines, WR06X103JTR and WR06X121JTR, print a TCR of 200 ppm, where the automotive General Purpose series prints 100 ppm for the same 0603, ±5% values. The current-sense lines are WW08WR270FTL, WW08WR390FTL and WW08WR470FTL, and the array is WA04X300JTL. For tight tolerance or current sensing on a vehicle, the twin lives in a different automotive series, so cross it deliberately. Our post on low-ohm current sense, thick film against metal covers the choice.
What is on the shelf in an automotive series, and what will we not say about Portugal?
Five of our 250 matched resistor lines are in an automotive series, all 1206 and all prefixed MF: MF12E1R00FTL, MF12E2200FTL, MF12E3300FTL, MF12E3902FTL and MF12P3303FTL. The General Purpose twins in the table above are a factory order. The stock list is a dated snapshot, 23 September 2026, and it moves. Our ready stock page shows what is held in Hong Kong now.
We state no Portuguese duty rate, tariff code, customs procedure, transit time or carrier, and we hold no office, entity or stock in Portugal. Confirm import and conformity questions with your compliance team. Our locations are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Singapore and Jiangmen, with Chengdu in preparation. IATF 16949, PPAP and IMDS records are not in the documents we hold, and we hold 28 Walsin datasheets of 451 pages to send on request.
Paste a Portuguese BOM into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, or load it through the BOM page. The chip resistor range lists the families. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.
The short version
Portugal built 341,361 vehicles in 2025 while AFIA expected component exports to fall. In our 23 September 2026 stock, 234 of 245 non-automotive resistor lines have an automotive-labelled twin one letter away, 11 do not, and 5 lines are already automotive.
Send us one resistor line from a Portuguese automotive build and we will return the J-suffix twin with every difference stated. If a part is one letter away, why is your approval still a six-month project?
