Luxembourg has ordered a liquid-cooled supercomputer, and dense power boards make the footprint of a current-sense resistor a real constraint. We counted Walsin’s export: no metal-element sense resistor in 0805 goes above 0.2 ohm, and all 32 above that value are 1206 or 2512. Our three stocked sense resistors are 0805 thick-film parts at 0.27, 0.39 and 0.47 ohm.
Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin Technology (Walsin) chip resistor export of 234,815 rows, 234,401 of them distinct part numbers. This post is for a design engineer or buyer at a Luxembourg research-computing, power-electronics or data-centre equipment team who wants to know what a Hong Kong source can offer for current sensing. Every part number below is real and every count is ours. Where it states a project fact, it names the source, the date and the day we read it. We know nothing about the boards inside the machine, and nothing here says a Walsin part is used in it.
What did Luxembourg order for MeluXina-AI, and when?
A supercomputer of 252 liquid-cooled nodes, signed for on 22 July 2026. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking announced on 22 July 2026 a procurement contract with E4 Computer Engineering, with Dell Technologies as subcontractor, for MeluXina-AI: 1,008 GPUs in 252 liquid-cooled nodes, at a total of EUR 80 million, half funded by EuroHPC through the Digital Europe Programme. We read the release on 22 October 2026.
The release says installation is expected to start in the fall of 2026, that the system will be hosted and run by LuxProvide across two sites, Bissen and Bettembourg, and that its estimated AI peak performance is over 20 exaflops. It gives no power figure and no date for service. The Luxembourg government’s innovation agency, Luxinnovation, reported on 11 March 2025 that the Luxembourg State had committed EUR 60 million to the project and that half of the capacity would go to the EuroHPC network and European countries and half to national needs. The two money figures describe different things, and we do not reconcile them.
Our arithmetic: 1,008 GPUs over 252 nodes is four per node.
Why would a dense power board care about sense-resistor footprint?
Because a board that feeds hot processors in a liquid-cooled chassis has little spare area. A 2512 case is 6.4 by 3.2 mm by its metric size code, about 8.5 times the area of an 0805 at 2.0 by 1.2 mm, and a 1206 at 3.2 by 1.6 mm is about 2.1 times. We worked those ratios from the size codes in the export labels.
This is our view, labelled as ours: a team monitoring current on many rails will want the smallest shunt that meets its accuracy and power need, and will trade footprint against temperature coefficient and power rating. The sources we read say nothing about shunts. Our post on low-ohm current sense, thick film against metal sets out that trade, and the temperature-coefficient count shows that the thick-film family has a wide TCR spread.
How many Walsin metal-element sense resistors fit an 0805 footprint?
61, and none above 0.2 ohm. We parsed the Walsin low-ohm current-sense files: 1,188 metal-element parts and 10,428 thick-film parts, all distinct. The metal-element file holds 61 parts in 0805, with a top value of 0.2 ohm, while its 32 parts above 0.2 ohm split 17 in 1206 and 15 in 2512.
The thick-film file is different: of its 1,781 parts in 0805, 1,013 sit above 0.2 ohm, up to 0.976 ohm. We have not seen this counted anywhere: from 0.2 ohm upward, the only way to get a metal-element sense resistor from Walsin is to move from 0805 to a case at least 2.1 times larger, and the only way to stay at 0805 is to use a thick-film part. Metal-element parts live low: 1,144 of the 1,188 are at or below 0.1 ohm. The metal-element file reaches 0.0005 ohm. We have not checked whether any other maker’s range is similar, and we make no claim about one.
Which Walsin parts cross our three stocked sense resistors?
Each stocked 0805 part has a metal-element part of the same resistance, in a larger case. These are the three we hold, and the export’s metal-element part at the same value.
| Stocked part (23 September 2026) | Walsin metal-element part | Size | Resistance, tolerance | TCR | Rated power | Match / mismatch (0805 thick-film sense resistor) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
WW08WR270FTL |
WW25DR270FTL |
2512 | 0.27 ohm, ±1% | ≦±50 against ≦±100 | 2 W against 1/4 W | Match on resistance and tolerance; mismatch on size, TCR and power |
WW08WR390FTL |
WW12DR390FTL |
1206 | 0.39 ohm, ±1% | ≦±50 against ≦±100 | 1 W against 1/4 W | Match on resistance and tolerance; mismatch on size, TCR and power |
WW08WR470FTL |
WW12DR470FTL |
1206 | 0.47 ohm, ±1% | ≦±50 against ≦±100 | 1 W against 1/4 W | Match on resistance and tolerance; mismatch on size, TCR and power |
The metal-element parts are labelled in the export as Metal Foil Low Ohm Power Sensing chip resistors. A better TCR and a higher power rating are what the larger case buys. Whether your layout, your amplifier and your accuracy target want that is your engineer’s decision. The stocked parts are in the export’s thick-film low-ohm current-sense series. None of the three metal-element parts is on our shelf.
What do we hold in stock and in documents for current sensing?
Three stocked sense lines, and no datasheet for the family. We counted our stock list as at 23 September 2026, 1,125 part numbers: 3 are current-sense resistors, all WW08 in 0805 at 0.27, 0.39 and 0.47 ohm, and none of the 28 Walsin datasheets we hold, 451 pages, contains the words shunt, current sense, supercomputer, data center or server.
The two resistor datasheets we hold cover the WR general purpose and MR automotive families, not WW. So every sense-resistor figure in this post is from the Walsin export, not from a datasheet, and we flag it for your review. The stock list is a dated snapshot and moves. The ready stock page shows what is held in Hong Kong now, and we quote part-number counts, never piece counts. Venatech holds neither ISO 9001 nor ISO 13485, and nothing here is a qualification claim.
How can Venatech help a Luxembourg power-electronics team?
By crossing the sense resistor you already use, stating the differences, and telling you what is missing. Venatech Limited is an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong. Walsin is our only authorised line, and the other lines we supply are Stackpole and Viking.
- Cross-reference. Paste your incumbent number into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, and read each Walsin candidate with match and mismatch stated field by field, including size, TCR and rated power.
- BOM check. Upload a power-board bill of materials to /bom/ and have each line checked against the same engine.
- Ready stock. The ready stock list is a Hong Kong snapshot dated 23 September 2026, never live-synced.
- Service. Hong Kong-based, small lots, cross-referencing help, and a quote requested through the site. Our address is Unit 207, 2/F, Sun Ling Plaza, 30 On Kui Street, Fanling, N.T., Hong Kong, telephone (852) 2628 4777.
A worked example from our own export: a 0.27 ohm, ±1% sense resistor on an 0805 footprint is the stocked WW08WR270FTL. If you need a TCR of ≦±50 at the same value, the candidate is WW25DR270FTL, which is not stocked and needs a 2512 footprint. Our chip resistor range lists the families. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.
The short version
Luxembourg signed on 22 July 2026 for MeluXina-AI, 1,008 GPUs in 252 liquid-cooled nodes, per EuroHPC. For current sensing, Walsin’s metal-element range stops at 0.2 ohm in 0805, and all 32 parts above it are 1206 or 2512. Our three stocked sense resistors are 0805 thick-film parts, and no metal-element twin is on the shelf.
Send us the sense resistor from one power board and we will return the Walsin parts with the differences stated. When the footprint is fixed and the accuracy target is not, which do you give up first?
