A thin film alternative to a stocked chip resistor exists at the same size and value for 230 of our 245 stocked lines. It shares the tolerance for only 23. We joined the 23 September 2026 Hong Kong ready-stock snapshot to Walsin’s thin film export, and the match stops where the tolerance starts.
A buyer in Hungary who sees a thick film line on our shelf and wonders about a thin film part is asking three questions at once: does the same size and value exist, is the tolerance the same, and what happens to the temperature coefficient. Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the stock snapshot dated 23 September 2026 and the thin film and chip resistor export files published by Walsin Technology (Walsin). This post joins them. Every part number is real, every count is of part numbers and never of pieces, and the thin film side is read from the export because we hold no thin film datasheet.
How many stocked chip resistor lines have a thin film row at the same size and value?
230 of 245, or 93.9 percent. We took the 254 chip resistor lines in the snapshot, resolved 249 of them against the chip resistor export (183 exactly, and 66 more once the export’s embedded space is removed), dropped the 4 zero-ohm jumpers, and looked up each of the remaining 245 by case size and resistance in the thin film export. 230 have a thin film row in the same cell, 2,252 thin film part numbers in all: at least 4, a median of 8 and at most 28 per stocked line.
| Stocked tolerance | Stocked lines | With a thin film row at the same size and value | With the same tolerance as well | Match / mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| plus or minus 5% | 62 | 61 | 0 | Mismatch — the thin film export’s loosest tolerance is plus or minus 1% |
| plus or minus 1% | 178 | 164 | 21 | Match on size and value, mismatch on tolerance for 143 of the 164 |
| plus or minus 0.5% | 2 | 2 | 0 | Mismatch — at those cells thin film is plus or minus 0.01% |
| plus or minus 0.1% | 3 | 3 | 2 | Match for 2 of 3 |
| Total | 245 | 230 | 23 |
We have not seen this counted anywhere. The shelf is thick film, and the match is real on the two fields people check first and thin on the third. The stocked lines sit at six sizes: 4 at 0201, 71 of 79 at 0402, 98 of 99 at 0603, 24 of 29 at 0805, 31 of 32 at 1206 and 2 at 2512. None sits at 1210 or 2010.
Which stocked lines have no thin film row at their size and value?
Fifteen, and each fails for one of three countable reasons. We checked every miss against the lowest and highest value the thin film export lists at that size. Eight lie above the ceiling, all at 0402 where thin film stops at 255 kilohm. Six lie below the floor, at 0603 and 0805 where thin film starts at 4.7 ohm. One sits inside the range with its value absent.
| Stocked line | Size and value | Reason | Match / mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
WR04X1004FTL |
0402, 1 megohm | above the 255 kilohm 0402 ceiling (WF04Q2553TTL is the top) |
Mismatch — no thin film row |
WR04X334JTL |
0402, 330 kilohm | above the ceiling | Mismatch |
WR06W2R70FTL |
0603, 2.70 ohm | below the 4.7 ohm floor (WF06B4R70TTL is the bottom) |
Mismatch |
WR12W5R60FTL |
1206, 5.60 ohm | inside the range; thin film lists 5.62 ohm (WF12Q5R62TTL), not 5.60 |
Mismatch — a neighbouring step, not the value |
The other four below-floor lines are the stocked 0805 parts at 3.30 ohm and at 0.27, 0.39 and 0.47 ohm; the last three are WW prefix low-ohm parts, a range the thin film export does not list. The 5.60 ohm line is the instructive one. Thin film is not missing the decade; it lists 5.62 where the stock holds 5.60, a 0.36 percent difference in the value itself.
How often does the thin film row also share the tolerance?
In 23 of 230 cells, 10.0 percent. We compared the stocked tolerance with every thin film tolerance listed in the same size-and-value cell. Of the 61 stocked plus-or-minus 5 percent lines that have a thin film row at the same size and value, none can match its tolerance, because the thin film export’s loosest value is plus or minus 1 percent. The other 207 of 230 differ, and in every one thin film lists a tighter value than the stocked line: at 0402 and above, the WF series lists only plus or minus 0.01 percent.
This is a structural limit, not a gap in our shelf. The thin film grid behind it is in the 26 live TCR and tolerance cells, and the reason one value fills 52,808 rows is in one tolerance value on 52,808 rows. A thin film row at plus or minus 0.01 percent is a different specification from plus or minus 5 percent, not a better version of the same one, and a circuit that never needed it should not pay for it in qualification effort.
What differs when size, value and tolerance all match?
The temperature coefficient and usually the rated power. We compared the best published limit in each of the 230 cells. Thin film’s best temperature coefficient is tighter than the stocked line’s in 230 of 230 cells; the stocked lines publish not more than plus or minus 100, 200 or a range of minus 200 to plus 400 ppm per degree Celsius.
| Stocked line | Stocked specification | Thin film part in the same cell | Match / mismatch |

Match on size, value, power. Mismatch on tolerance and temperature coefficient |
WR12X1003FTL |
1206, 100 kilohm, plus or minus 1%, not more than plus or minus 100, 1/4 W | MF12Q1003FTL — plus or minus 1%, not more than plus or minus 50, 2/5 W |

WF12H1202BTL |
1206, 12 kilohm, plus or minus 0.1%, not more than plus or minus 100, 1/4 W | MF12Q1202BTL — plus or minus 0.1%, not more than plus or minus 50, 2/5 W |
Match on tolerance. Mismatch on temperature coefficient and power |
WF04H1202DTL |
0402, 12 kilohm, plus or minus 0.5%, not more than plus or minus 100, 1/16 W | WF04Q1202TTL — plus or minus 0.01%, not more than plus or minus 50, 1/10 W |
Mismatch on tolerance, temperature coefficient and power |
We will not tell you any of these is equivalent. Each row is a candidate to qualify, and the 1206 pair changes the rated power from 1/4 W to 2/5 W. We hold two resistor datasheets, WR and MR, and none for thin film, so confirm the thin film figures against Walsin’s own site and the stocked line against its datasheet. Where the stocked line is automotive, the grade question is a separate one; see the AEC-Q200 split in MR, SR and the rest.
Does a stocked WF or MF code mean thin film is on the shelf?
No, and the snapshot proves it. We counted every stocked code that starts WF or MF: 13 of them, 8 WF and 5 MF. Zero of the 13 is a thin film part number. Ten resolve to the chip resistor export as thick film, and three resolve to no export row at all: WF06Q7502FTL, WF06U5363BTL and WF08R1203BTL. Thin film itself has 0 of 93,914 part numbers on the shelf as at 23 September 2026.
The three unresolved lines are each one character from a real thin film part, at position 10: WF06Q7502TTL is in the thin film export at 75 kilohm and plus or minus 0.01 percent, where the stocked line ends in F. Position 10 reads T on all 52,808 plus-or-minus-0.01-percent thin film rows. A stocked line asking for 0603 at 75 kilohm in a tolerance the thin film export never lists at 0603 is a line to ask us about, not to assume. The prefix problem itself is in one character apart across 6,836 pairs.
The short version
Of 245 stocked Walsin chip resistor lines, 230 have a thin film row at the same size and value, 2,252 thin film part numbers in all. 23 share the tolerance, and none of the 61 plus-or-minus 5 percent lines can, because the thin film export stops at plus or minus 1 percent. Thin film’s temperature coefficient is tighter in all 230 cells. Fifteen lines have no thin film row: eight above the 0402 ceiling, six below the floor, one on a neighbouring step. No thin film part number is on the shelf. We will show you where each row differs and leave the decision to your qualification.
Send us the stocked line you use and the tolerance and temperature coefficient you need, and we will name the thin film cell and what it changes. Paste up to 500 part numbers into the free cross-reference tool, and check the dated shelf on ready stock, 1,125 part numbers as at 23 September 2026, not a live feed. A question back: if the thin film part is tighter in all 230 cells, which of your 230 requirements actually asked for it?
The range is on the chip resistor and thin film pages. We hold 28 Walsin datasheets, 451 pages, sent on request. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit. Venatech Limited, Unit 207, 2/F, Sun Ling Plaza, 30 On Kui Street, Fanling, N.T., Hong Kong, (852) 2628 4777.

Does Venatech stock thin film chip resistors in Hong Kong?
Not as at 23 September 2026. Of the 1,125 part numbers in the snapshot, none is in the thin film export. Thirteen stocked codes start WF or MF, but ten are thick film in the chip resistor export and three match no export row. Ask us about thin film requirements directly.
How many stocked chip resistor lines have a thin film option at the same size and value?
230 of 245, 93.9 percent, excluding 4 zero-ohm jumpers. Between them they have 2,252 thin film part numbers in the same size-and-value cells, a median of 8 per stocked line. The other 15 sit above the 0402 ceiling, below the thin film floor, or on a neighbouring value step.
Does the thin film option have the same tolerance as the stocked line?
Rarely. Only 23 of the 230 share the stocked tolerance. None of the 61 plus-or-minus 5 percent lines can, since the thin film export’s loosest tolerance is plus or minus 1 percent. At 0402 and above the WF series lists only plus or minus 0.01 percent.
Is the thin film temperature coefficient better than the stocked line?
In all 230 cells the best thin film limit is tighter. The stocked lines publish not more than plus or minus 100 or 200 ppm per degree Celsius, or a range of minus 200 to plus 400. Thin film cells publish limits from plus or minus 3 to plus or minus 50. Qualify it in your circuit.
Why is there no thin film row for 1 megohm at 0402?
The thin film export stops at 255 kilohm at 0402, and its 0603 range stops at 1 megohm. Eight stocked lines sit above the 0402 ceiling, including WR04X1004FTL at 1 megohm. For that value you would need a different footprint or the thick film part.
Is a stocked part with a WF prefix a thin film resistor?
Not necessarily. We counted 13 stocked WF and MF codes and none is a thin film part number. Ten are thick film in the chip resistor export. Read the series string and the temperature coefficient in the export, not the prefix.
