MLCC dielectric by case size is a thin grid. We crossed Walsin’s 9 dielectric codes with its 16 case sizes: 58 of the 144 cells hold a part number, 86 are empty, and 24 cells hold 96.1 percent of the 23,601 distinct part numbers. X5R is absent from 9 of 16 case sizes.
A drop-down that lets you pick X5R and then 1812 is offering you something the catalogue does not hold. Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the parametric export published by Walsin Technology (Walsin). This post is written from 00_ALL_MLCC_parts_combined.xlsx. We parsed all 24,026 rows, removed the QA row and the repeated part numbers, and counted every dielectric and case-size pair. Two data defects are normalised, both published earlier: one row carries its series name and a tab inside the Size field, and MT18N391J101 carries 390 where the dielectric belongs, which we read as NP0 from its code. Every part number below is real.
How many of the 144 dielectric and case size cells hold a Walsin MLCC?
58, which is 40.3 percent. The export names 9 dielectrics and 16 case sizes, giving 144 cells, and 86 of them hold nothing. The 24 cells with 100 or more part numbers hold 22,669 of the 23,601, 96.1 percent, and the five largest cells, all NP0 at 0201, 0402, 0603, 0805 and 1206, hold 55.2 percent on their own. The rest of the grid is a long tail.

We have not seen this counted anywhere. Walsin prints a capacitance grid per series inside each approval sheet. The cross of dielectric and case size across the whole export is a count we have not seen anywhere. By dielectric, NP0 fills 15 of 16 sizes, X7R fills 14, X5R 7, X6S 6, X7S 6, X8G 5, X8R 3, and X7T and Y5V one each: 15 + 14 + 7 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 58. For the same population cut by voltage, see MLCC voltage rating by dielectric.
Which dielectrics disappear as the case size grows?
X5R, X6S, X7S and X8G, in that order, and all of them by 1808. X5R is present at 7 case sizes, 01R5 through 1210, and absent at the other 9, including 1812, 2220 and 2225, where X7R reaches 22, 47 and 10 µF. We counted the six case sizes from 1808 up: five carry exactly NP0 and X7R and nothing else. The sixth, 2220, adds two X7T part numbers.
That shape has an engineering consequence a selector hides. If your design needs X5R and the board gives you a 1812 pad, no Walsin row answers, whatever the capacitance. The dielectric has to change first, and the size grid tells you in one lookup whether the change is available. We cover the difference between the codes in NP0 vs X7R vs X5R, and the X5R to X7R twin test in our companion post on the X5R to X7R swap.
Three case sizes carry a single dielectric. 0505 and 1111 are NP0 only, 97 and 149 part numbers, both in the microwave series. 0306 is X7R only, and it holds three part numbers.
Which cells hold only one, two or three part numbers?
Six. We listed every cell with 3 or fewer part numbers. Six cells hold 1 to 3 part numbers each, 12 part numbers in total, and each one is a specification you can only buy one way.
| Cell | Part numbers | Series | Value, voltage, tolerance | Your incumbent part | Match / mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| X7S at 0201 | 0201A104K100, 0201A104M100 |
General Purpose | 100 nF, 10 Vdc, 10% and 20% | ___ | Match only on this exact value. Mismatch at any other X7S value at 0201 |
| X7R at 0306 | 0306B225J4R0, 0306B225K4R0, 0306B225M4R0 |
General Purpose | 2.2 µF, 4 Vdc, 5%, 10% and 20% | ___ | Mismatch — one value, one voltage; the 0306 size sits in no ordering key we hold |
| X7S at 1206 | 1206A226M160, 1206A476M6R3 |
General Purpose | 22 µF 16 Vdc; 47 µF 6.3 Vdc, 20% | ___ | Mismatch — two values only |
| Y5V at 1206 | 1206F474M500, 1206F474Z500 |
General Purpose | 470 nF, 50 Vdc, 20% and minus 20 to plus 80% | ___ | Mismatch — one value; the Y5V letter is in the ordering key but no Y5V section is in the approval sheet |
| X7S at 1210 | 1210A107M6R3 |
General Purpose | 100 µF, 6.3 Vdc, 20% | ___ | Mismatch — a single part number |
| X7T at 2220 | SH55T225K251, SH55T225M251 |
SH soft termination | 2.2 µF, 250 Vdc, 10% and 20% | ___ | Mismatch — one value, one series |
1210A107M6R3 is the one cell in the whole grid with a single occupant. If a drawing calls out a 100 µF X7S at 1210 and the part is not in your approved list, the grid says there is no second source inside this export. That is a statement about the export. It is not a statement that no other part exists anywhere.
Does the General Purpose datasheet agree with the export on dielectric and size?
Mostly, with three exceptions. The General Purpose approval sheet, 01_General_Purpose.pdf, names five dielectrics in section 6 and prints one capacitance grid per dielectric and size band in section 7. The section headings declare 31 dielectric-by-size cells: NP0 and X7R at 7 sizes each, X5R and X6S at 6, X7S at 5. The export’s General Purpose rows fill 34.
The three extra cells are X7R at 0306 (3 part numbers), Y5V at 1206 (2) and X7S at 0201 (2). The X7S one is a heading issue rather than a data one: section 7-6 is headed 0402 to 1210, but the grid’s first column is 0201 and prints 0.1 µF at 6.3 and 10 V, which matches 0201A104K100. The Y5V and 0306 cells have no grid section at all in the sheet we hold, which is the sheet dated Sep. 2026. The ordering key on page 2 lists F=Y5V, so the code is documented and the capacitance grid is not.
How many of the 58 cells does Hong Kong stock reach?
27 of 58. We matched the snapshot dated 23 September 2026 against the export: 762 of the 864 MLCC stock lines have a code in the export. Those 762 part numbers sit in 27 of the 58 filled cells, and 31 filled cells have no part number on the shelf. Part-number counts, not pieces.
Stock is concentrated where the export is: 0201 holds 99 lines, 0402 152, 0603 155, 0805 149, 1206 102, 1210 47, 1812 41, 1808 14 and 2220 3. It holds none at 01R5, 0306, 0505, 1111, 1825, 2211 and 2225. By dielectric the shelf covers NP0, X7R, X5R, X6S, X8G (3 lines at 0805) and Y5V (1 line at 1206, 1206F474Z500). It holds no X7S, X7T or X8R. The snapshot is a dated record and not a live feed; check the current position on our ready-stock page.
How should you search when your dielectric and size cell is empty?
Move one axis at a time and note which fields change. Start from the cell your drawing names, then check the neighbour on each axis: the next dielectric at the same size, and the same dielectric at the next size up. The free cross-reference tool does this automatically for up to 500 part numbers, or an Excel or CSV file, and states every difference from your original instead of hiding it behind a tick.
Three rules, each measured above. If you need X5R above 1210, change the dielectric first: 9 of 16 sizes have no X5R. If you need NP0 above 10 nF, check the case size before the series, as we show in the NP0 ceiling post. If your cell holds 1 to 3 part numbers, ask for the datasheet page before you freeze the design. We hold 28 Walsin datasheets, 451 pages, and will send the one covering your part number. The full range is on the MLCC product page. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.
The short version
Of 144 dielectric-by-case-size cells in Walsin’s MLCC export, 58 hold a part number and 86 hold none. 24 cells hold 96.1 percent of the 23,601 part numbers, and five NP0 cells hold 55.2 percent. X5R is absent from 9 of 16 case sizes, and the six sizes from 1808 up are NP0 and X7R only, bar two X7T parts at 2220. Six cells hold 1 to 3 part numbers, and 1210A107M6R3 stands alone in its cell. The General Purpose sheet headings declare 31 cells and the export fills 34. Hong Kong stock as at 23 September 2026 reaches 27 of the 58 filled cells. We will not call a neighbouring cell a replacement. We will show you which cell you left. Qualification stays with you.
Send us the dielectric and case size from each line of your bill of materials and we will place it on this grid, with the neighbouring cells and what was on the shelf. And a question back: when your selector offered you X5R at 1812, did it show you a part number, or only a drop-down?
