Lighting Electronics for Italy: Mediobanca Counts 58 Lighting Firms in a 530-Firm Panel, and 167 of 490 Stocked Walsin Capacitor Lines Have a Soft-Termination Twin, 7 of Them on the Shelf

Lighting electronics for Italy meet a mechanical limit before an electrical one: a ceramic capacitor on a long or metal-backed board can crack when the board flexes. We matched our 23 September 2026 stock list to Walsin’s export: 167 of 490 stocked general purpose MLCC lines have a soft-termination SH or SG twin. Only 7 of those twins are on our shelf.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, wrote this from the Walsin Technology (Walsin) MLCC parametric export (24,026 rows, 23,601 distinct part numbers), our stock list as at 23 September 2026 (1,125 part numbers) and the 28 Walsin datasheets we hold, 451 pages. It is for a design engineer or buyer at an Italian luminaire or driver maker. Every part number below is real and every count is ours. The market statements name the source, its date and the day we fetched it, 23 October 2026.

What did Mediobanca report about Italian lighting in April 2026?

A flat sector with a small lighting panel inside it. Area Studi Mediobanca’s survey of Italian furniture and lighting companies, closed on information available at 3 April 2026, covers 530 firms with turnover above 10 million euro, of which 58 are lighting firms in ATECO class 27.40.09. The report does not give separate lighting figures, so every number below is for furniture and lighting combined.

For the combined sector it put 2024 turnover at 32.1 billion euro, down 2.9 percent, panel turnover up 1.3 percent in 2025 and expected up 0.8 percent in 2026, and sector exports up 0.4 percent in 2025, with over 65 percent of exports going to Europe. By destination it reported France down 2.1 percent, the United States down 4.0 percent, Germany up 4.8 percent and China down 9.4 percent. It says nothing about electronic components, and we draw no conclusion about which parts any Italian company buys. We have no relationship with Mediobanca.

Why do lighting boards ask for soft-termination capacitors?

Because the board bends and the ceramic does not. Our view, not Mediobanca’s: a long LED board, particularly one that is depanelled or screwed to a heat sink, flexes in assembly, and a standard termination can crack under the bend that a soft polymer layer survives. Walsin’s own sheets say the same in their own words: the SH and SG sheets describe a soft and flexible polymer layer to withstand high bending stress in the SMT line.

The numbers in Walsin’s test table make the difference concrete. In the text we extracted, the general purpose sheet’s bending test presses the board to a deflection of 1 mm, and the SH and SG sheets press it to 5 mm. Our posts on soft termination MLCC and on flex cracking and board bend cover the mechanism; this one counts what our shelf can cross to.

How many stocked Walsin capacitor lines have a soft-termination twin?

167 of 490. We joined all 864 MLCC lines in our stock list, as at 23 September 2026, to the export, kept the 490 general purpose lines and looked for an SH (Ag-poly) or SG (Cu-poly) part with the same size, dielectric, capacitance, rated voltage and tolerance: 166 have an SH twin, 34 an SG twin, and 167 have at least one. Those lines point at 200 distinct soft-termination part numbers, and only 7 of the 200 are on our shelf. We have not seen this counted anywhere.

The twins cluster in the middle sizes. At 0201 the count is 0 of 68, at 0402 it is 29 of 119, and at 0603 it is 63 of 125. The 1210 and 1812 lines are small groups. A twin is a catalogue match, not a qualification.

Stocked size Stocked lines With an SH or SG twin Match / mismatch
0201 68 0 Mismatch: the soft-termination files start at 0402
0402 119 29 Match on five fields; mismatch on termination
0603 125 63 Match on five fields; mismatch on termination
0805 97 51 Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and, for some, height
1206 47 15 Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and, for some, height
1210 and 1812 34 9 Match on five fields; mismatch on termination
All 490 167 323 lines have no soft-termination twin

On height, 129 of the 166 SH twins have the same nominal thickness as their general purpose line and 32 are taller by nominal value, for example 1.25 mm against 0.80 mm at 0805. Check the clearance under a lens or a heat-sink pad before you accept the swap.

Which worked part numbers show the soft-termination twins, and what differs?

Take the stocked 0603 line 0603B104K500: X7R, 100 nF, 50 V, plus or minus 10 percent. SH18B104K500 shares its size, dielectric, value, voltage and tolerance, and is on the shelf; SG18B104K500 is the Cu-poly twin and is not. The last column is for your incumbent part.

Walsin part Series as exported Thickness (T) Stock, 23 September 2026 Match / mismatch Your incumbent
0603B104K500 General Purpose, X7R, 100 nF, 50 V, 10% 0.80 +0.15/-0.10 mm Held Reference line
SH18B104K500 Soft Termination SH (Ag-poly) 0.80 plus or minus 0.30 mm Held Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and thickness tolerance
SG18B104K500 Soft Termination SG (Cu-poly) 0.80 plus or minus 0.30 mm Not held Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and stock
0805B221K500 General Purpose, X7R, 220 pF, 50 V, 10% 0.80 plus or minus 0.10 mm Held Reference line
SH21B221K500 Soft Termination SH 1.25 plus or minus 0.10 mm Held Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and height
0805B104K500 General Purpose, X7R, 100 nF, 50 V, 10% 0.80 plus or minus 0.10 mm Held Reference line
SH21B104K500 Soft Termination SH 1.25 plus or minus 0.10 mm Not held Match on five fields; mismatch on termination, height and stock
0402N271G500 General Purpose, NP0, 270 pF, 50 V, 2% 0.50 plus or minus 0.05 mm Held Reference line
SH15N271G500 Soft Termination SH 0.50 plus or minus 0.20 mm Held Match on five fields; mismatch on termination and thickness tolerance

A soft-termination part is not a drop-in on every board: the thickness tolerance is wider on several rows, and the terminations are a different material system. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

What do Walsin’s documents say about lighting?

Lighting appears, but not for the general purpose series. We converted all 28 Walsin datasheets we hold, 451 pages, to text and searched them: lighting is named in 9 of 28 files. In the SH and SG sheets it is listed as an application (“Lighting industry”); in the three safety sheets it appears as other electronic equipment for lighting or surge; in four others it is back-lighting inverters. The general purpose sheet does not name it, and neither of the two resistor sheets does.

So the two series that name lighting outright are the two that carry the twins above. That is a statement of what the sheets print, not a qualification for any luminaire. We hold no sheet for inductors, varistors or thin film at all.

What can a Hong Kong distributor not tell an Italian lighting maker?

Anything about Italian or European lighting, energy-label or product rules. We hold no office, entity or stock in Italy; our locations are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Singapore and Jiangmen, with Chengdu in preparation. We state no duty, customs position, transit time or carrier, and we give no legal, customs or compliance advice; confirm with your compliance team. We make no claim that any Walsin part is approved for a luminaire.

How Venatech helps

Start with the cross-reference. Paste the capacitor from your driver or LED board into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts and lists Walsin candidates with match and mismatch fields, or upload a bill of materials to the BOM checker, up to 500 part numbers. The Hong Kong ready-stock list is a dated snapshot, 23 September 2026, never live-synced. Walsin is the only line we are authorised for; Stackpole and Viking are lines we supply. We work from Hong Kong, in small lots, and you can request a quote through the site. We offer lot and date-code traceability and a certificate of conformity per shipment on request. We hold neither ISO 9001 nor IATF 16949. The tables above came from our own export; the MLCC range lists the series. Qualification stays with you.

The short version

For an Italian lighting board, a soft-termination part is a catalogue option on 167 of the 490 general purpose capacitor lines we hold, mostly at 0402 to 0805, never at 0201, and in 32 cases taller. Only 7 of the 200 soft-termination twins are on the shelf. Of 28 Walsin datasheets, 9 name lighting, including the SH and SG sheets.

Send us one capacitor from your LED board and we will return the general purpose and soft-termination candidates with every difference stated. If your boards flex at depanelling, which test will you run before the swap?
