Robot Electronics for Japan: With Robot Orders Forecast at a Record 1.22 Trillion Yen in 2026, a 30 A Servo Drive Needs the 2 mΩ Rung, Because Only 8 of 56 Walsin 2 mΩ Sense Rows Carry 3 W and None Is on the Shelf

Robot electronics components for Japan start at the servo drive’s shunt. A 30 A phase current through 2 mΩ dissipates 1.8 W, which a 3 W part can carry, but only 8 of the 56 Walsin 2 mΩ sense rows are rated 3 W. We checked the Hong Kong shelf: none of the 1,188 metal sense rows is held.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin Technology (Walsin) chip resistor export of 234,815 rows, 1,188 of them in the metal low-ohm current sense group. This post is for a design engineer or buyer at a Japanese maker of industrial or service robots, or of the servo drives inside them, who wants to know what a Hong Kong source can offer at the drive’s shunt. Every part number below is real and every count is ours. Where it states a market fact it names the source, its date and the day we read it, 23 October 2026.

What did the Japan Robot Association forecast for 2026?

The Japan Robot Association (JARA) forecast industrial robot orders of 1.22 trillion yen for 2026, up 16.7 percent on 2025 and 190 billion yen above its January outlook, which would be a record. We read one report on 23 October 2026, and its page is marked updated on 23 June 2026.

It records 2025 orders of 1.0456 trillion yen, up 25.7 percent, and shipments of 993.7 billion yen, up 20.4 percent, the first annual growth in three years. It says exports were the main contributor to shipment growth in 2025 and that the home market stayed sluggish, particularly in car making. The growth drivers it names are AI-related electronics demand, a faster rise than expected in orders for electronic component mounting robots from November, and semiconductor and electronics equipment investment. JARA’s forecast leaves out the risk of customer production disruption from the situation in the Middle East.

Our view, labelled as ours: more robots means more motor axes, and each axis carries a current-sense element. The report does not say that, and it names no resistor.

How much power does a servo-drive shunt have to dissipate?

Power in the shunt is current squared times resistance, so it falls with the resistance and rises with the square of the current. We parsed all 1,188 rows of the Walsin metal low-ohm sense export: the highest rated power in the whole group is 3 W, and every rung from 1 mΩ to 10 mΩ has exactly 8 rows at that rating, all in the 2512 case.

The 30 A phase current below is our assumption for a mid-size joint or axis, not a JARA figure and not a rule. The power column is our arithmetic.

Resistance rung Rows in the export Rows rated 2 W or more Rows rated 3 W Power at 30 A Share of 3 W Match / mismatch (30 A axis)
1 mΩ 48 21 8 0.9 W 30% Match with headroom, at the cost of signal amplitude
2 mΩ 56 23 8 1.8 W 60% Match on the 3 W rows only
3 mΩ 64 23 8 2.7 W 90% Mismatch: almost no headroom
5 mΩ 76 24 8 4.5 W 150% Mismatch: over the rating
10 mΩ 79 25 8 9.0 W 300% Mismatch: three times the rating

We have not seen this counted anywhere: the 3 W ceiling is the same 8 rows at every rung. A 30 A axis that moves from 3 mΩ to 2 mΩ keeps 8 usable rows and cuts the dissipation by a third, and from 5 mΩ nothing in the file is large enough. The current at which a part reaches its rating is the square root of power over resistance: 38.7 A at 2 mΩ, 31.6 A at 3 mΩ and 24.5 A at 5 mΩ. A shunt also needs to sit well below its rating, which is why we use 60 percent.

Which Walsin sense resistors cross a 2 mΩ, 30 A shunt?

Four 2512 parts match on resistance, tolerance and rating, and the rest give up headroom, tolerance or case size. Say your drive has a 2 mΩ, ±1 percent, 2512 shunt and you want to stay at or below 60 percent of rating at 30 A. These are the real parts nearest to it, taken from the export.

Walsin part Series label Case Resistance and tolerance TCR (ppm per °C) Rated power In stock 23 September 2026 Match / mismatch (2 mΩ, ±1%, 2512, 30 A)
WW25BR002FTL Metal Plate 2512 2 mΩ, ±1% ≦±70 3 W No Match on all fields
WW25AR002FTL Metal Plate Power 2512 2 mΩ, ±1% ≦±70 3 W No Match; the series label differs and every exported field is the same as the part above
WW25BR002FTLJ Metal Plate (Automotive) 2512 2 mΩ, ±1% ≦±70 3 W No Match; carries an automotive series label, which is a claim to check, not a document we hold
WW25BR002JTL Metal Plate 2512 2 mΩ, ±5% ≦±70 3 W No Mismatch: tolerance
WW25NR002FTL Metal Plate Power 2512 2 mΩ, ±1% ≦±70 2 W No Mismatch: 1.8 W is 90% of rating
WW25YR002FTL Metal Foil 1225 2 mΩ, ±1% ≦±100 2 W No Mismatch: case, rating and TCR

The two 3 W parts at the top, WW25BR002FTL and WW25AR002FTL, are identical in all six fields the export carries. We have not seen a datasheet that says why Walsin gives them two series labels. Request it before you treat them as interchangeable. Our post on low-ohm current sense, thick film against metal explains how the two technologies differ, and the chip resistor power rating by case size post shows why a 2512 is the only case that reaches 3 W here.

What does the Hong Kong shelf hold for a servo drive?

Nothing in the metal group, and one line family in the thick film group, at the wrong resistance. We counted our stock list as at 23 September 2026, 1,125 part numbers, against the 1,188 metal sense rows: 0 are held. Against the 10,428 thick film low-ohm rows, 3 are held: WW08WR270FTL, WW08WR390FTL and WW08WR470FTL, all 0805 and 1/4 W.

Their lowest value is 0.27 ohm, which is 135 times the 2 mΩ rung, so they suit a small sense node and not a drive shunt. A drive shunt in this range is a factory order. We hold no datasheet for either sense group: of the 28 Walsin datasheets we hold, 451 pages, only 2 are chip resistor sheets and neither is a sense resistor. The shelf is a dated snapshot and moves, and the ready stock page shows what is held now.

Twenty-four of the 56 rows at 2 mΩ, and 4 of the 8 at 3 W, are in a series whose name carries the word Automotive. Walsin’s own wording elsewhere is compliant with AEC-Q200, not certified, and Venatech makes no qualification claim, so ask us for the qualification report for the exact part number you intend to use.

How can Venatech help a Japanese robot maker?

By crossing the part you have already chosen, stating every difference, and telling you what we do not hold. Venatech Limited is an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong. Walsin is our only authorised line, and the other lines we supply are Stackpole and Viking.

  • Cross-reference. Paste your incumbent number into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, and read each Walsin candidate with match and mismatch stated field by field.
  • BOM check. Upload a servo-drive or motor-controller bill of materials to /bom/ and have each line checked against the same engine.
  • Ready stock. The ready stock list is a Hong Kong snapshot dated 23 September 2026, never live-synced, and we quote part-number counts, never piece counts.
  • Service. Hong Kong-based, small lots, cross-referencing help, and a quote requested through the site. Our address is Unit 207, 2/F, Sun Ling Plaza, 30 On Kui Street, Fanling, N.T., Hong Kong, telephone (852) 2628 4777.

A worked example from our own export: a 2 mΩ, ±1 percent shunt for a 30 A axis maps to WW25BR002FTL and WW25AR002FTL, neither stocked, so it is a factory order, and the only stocked low-ohm lines start at 0.27 ohm. Our chip resistor range lists the families. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

The short version

JARA forecast a record 1.22 trillion yen of robot orders for 2026, as reported on 23 June 2026. On the drive, a 30 A axis through 2 mΩ puts 1.8 W into the shunt, and only 8 of the 56 Walsin 2 mΩ rows are rated for it. None of the 1,188 metal sense rows is on the Hong Kong shelf as at 23 September 2026.

Send us the shunt from one servo-drive board and we will return the Walsin parts with the differences stated. If your next axis carries more than 30 A, which gives way first, the resistance or the case size?

Frequently asked questions

What did JARA forecast for Japan’s robot orders in 2026?

JARA forecast orders of 1.22 trillion yen for 2026, up 16.7 percent on 2025 and 190 billion yen above its January outlook, per a Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun report republished by Mreport and updated on 23 June 2026. We have not read JARA’s own release.

What power does a 30 A servo drive put into a 2 mΩ shunt?

1.8 W, which is current squared times resistance, or 60 percent of a 3 W rating. At 3 mΩ it is 2.7 W, or 90 percent, and at 5 mΩ it is 4.5 W, over the rating. The 30 A figure is our assumption, not a rule.

How many Walsin sense resistors are rated 3 W?

Of 1,188 metal low-ohm rows we counted 156 rated 3 W, all in the 2512 case. At 2 mΩ, 8 of the 56 rows carry 3 W, and 4 of those 8 are ±1 percent. No row in the group is rated higher than 3 W.

Do you hold metal sense resistors in Hong Kong stock?

No. As at 23 September 2026 none of the 1,188 metal sense part numbers is held. We hold 3 thick film low-ohm lines, all 0805 and from 0.27 ohm upward. A 2 mΩ shunt is a factory order. The ready stock page shows what is held now.

Do you hold a datasheet or AEC-Q200 report for these sense resistors?

No datasheet for either sense group. We hold 28 Walsin datasheets, 451 pages, and only 2 are chip resistor sheets, neither a sense resistor. Some series labels say Automotive. Request the qualification report for the exact part number. Qualification stays with you.

Is the 60 percent rating target a rule?

No. It is our working assumption for the arithmetic in the tables, and derating is your engineer’s decision. The export does not state the ambient temperature at which Rated Power applies. Work from Walsin’s documents and your own thermal test.
