Boatbuilding Electronics for New Zealand from Hong Kong: 41 of 379 Walsin Varistor Rows Sit at 82 Volts DC Varistor Voltage or Below, All Are D Series and None Is on Our Shelf

Boatbuilding electronics for New Zealand run on a battery bus, and a battery bus needs a low-voltage varistor that most catalogues barely stock. We counted the Walsin Technology (Walsin) export: 41 of 379 varistor rows have a varistor voltage of 82 volts DC or below, every one is a D series disc, and none is on our Hong Kong shelf as at 23 September 2026.

Venatech Limited, an authorised Walsin distributor in Hong Kong, holds the Walsin varistor export of 379 rows and a stock list dated 23 September 2026. This post is for a design or procurement engineer at a New Zealand boatbuilder or marine electronics maker who has a transient-suppression varistor on a low-voltage bill of materials and an incumbent part number to cross. Every part number is real, every count is ours, and the news item names its source and the day we fetched it, 23 October 2026.

How big is the New Zealand boat building market?

Sizeable for a country of its population. An Auckland Boat Show article dated 13 February 2026 estimates the New Zealand marine industry at 3 billion dollars including 800 million dollars of exports, says around 30,000 boats are sold each year, and says about 40 percent of New Zealand-made powerboats are now sold offshore.

The detail, from the source we fetched. The article, published ahead of the 25th Auckland Boat Show on 5 to 8 March 2026, cites Maritime New Zealand data for close to two million boats in the country and says about 40 percent of the population takes part in boating. It reports space up 20 percent, room for 150 exhibitors and 200 boats, and a turnaround in market data in the final quarter of 2025. The dollar figures are written without a currency, and we assume New Zealand dollars. We draw one conclusion, and it is ours: a builder selling a large share offshore is a builder who must document the parts in every hull. We have no relationship with any New Zealand builder or show organiser.

How many low-voltage varistors does Walsin list?

Forty-one rows in nine steps. In the Walsin varistor export, 41 of 379 rows have a varistor voltage of 82 volts DC or below, in 9 steps of 18, 22, 27, 33, 39, 47, 56, 68 and 82 volts DC, and all 41 belong to the Standard D series.

We parsed Walsin_MOV_ALL.xlsx one row at a time. The 41 split by disc size as 9 each at 5, 7, 10 and 14 millimetre and 5 at 20 millimetre; the 20 millimetre size starts at 39 volts DC, so it has no part at the three lowest steps. We have not seen this cut counted anywhere. The export lists the maximum working voltage in volts AC only, from 11 volts AC at the 18 volt step to 50 volts AC at the 82 volt step, so a DC bus needs the Walsin datasheet, which we do not hold for varistors; the peak current runs from 100 amperes on the 5 millimetre disc at the lowest steps to 6,500 amperes on the 20 millimetre disc at the 82 volt step.

Which Walsin varistors cross a 33 volt, 10 millimetre disc brief?

One matches, none is on the shelf. Take a varistor with a 33 volts DC varistor voltage, 20 volts AC maximum working voltage, a 10 millimetre disc and 500 amperes peak current: SR330K10D matches on all four fields, and four neighbours differ in disc size, surge rating or voltage step.

Walsin part Disc, working voltage, varistor voltage, peak current On shelf 23 Sep 2026 Match / mismatch with the brief Your incumbent
SR330K10D 10 mm, 20 Vac, 33 Vdc, 500 A No Match on disc, working voltage, varistor voltage and peak current
SR330K07D 7 mm, 20 Vac, 33 Vdc, 250 A No Mismatch: smaller disc, half the peak current
SR330K14D 14 mm, 20 Vac, 33 Vdc, 1,000 A No Mismatch: larger disc, double the peak current
SR390K10D 10 mm, 25 Vac, 39 Vdc, 500 A No Mismatch: next voltage step up, 39 Vdc
SR270K10D 10 mm, 17 Vac, 27 Vdc, 500 A No Mismatch: next voltage step down, 27 Vdc

The steps are the whole point: the ladder moves 4 to 14 volts at a time, so a brief between two steps takes the higher one and a different clamp level. Our post on how to choose an MOV varistor sets out the selection steps, and the varistor range lists the series. Confirm against both datasheets and qualify in your own circuit.

What does a Hong Kong shelf hold in varistors for a New Zealand builder?

Nothing. As at 23 September 2026, 0 of the 379 Walsin varistor part numbers are on our stock list, including all 41 low-voltage rows, so every varistor is a quote.

For a boatbuilder planning a small run that is a straight answer: the ready stock list shows no varistor today, and the route is the cross-reference tool and a quote through the site. Stock moves; the list is a dated snapshot, never live-synced. Our post on Walsin passive components in Hong Kong stock covers what the shelf does hold. We hold lot and date-code traceability, a certificate of conformity per shipment on request and original sealed Walsin packaging.

What will we not tell you about marine electronics?

Anything about the marine environment. We make no claim that any Walsin part is suitable for marine or boat use, none of the 28 datasheets we hold names salt or sea water, and for varistors we hold no datasheet at all, so every figure above is from the export.

Treat each as unconfirmed until Walsin’s sheet is in your hands; it is on our request list. We hold no office, entity or stock in New Zealand. Our locations are Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Singapore and Jiangmen, with Chengdu in preparation. We give no legal, customs or conformity advice; confirm with your compliance team. Qualification stays with you.

How Venatech helps

Paste your incumbent into the free cross-reference tool, which decodes 18 manufacturers’ part numbers across 800,000+ crossable parts, and read the Walsin candidates with each field marked match or mismatch. Load a whole BOM, up to 500 part numbers or an Excel or CSV file, to run every line. The ready-stock list is a Hong Kong snapshot dated 23 September 2026, never live. Worked example from our own export: the 82 volts DC or below filter returned 41 of 379 rows in 9 steps, and a 33 volt, 10 millimetre brief has exactly one Walsin match, SR330K10D, with none of the 379 lines on the shelf. Walsin is the only line we are authorised for; Stackpole and Viking are lines we supply. We serve from Hong Kong in small lots, we help with cross-referencing by hand when the tool returns no clean candidate, and a quote is requested through the site. The 28 datasheets, 451 pages, we hold are sent on request.

The short version

For a New Zealand boatbuilder, the low-voltage varistor choice is nine steps wide: 41 of 379 rows sit at 82 volts DC varistor voltage or below, all D series, and 0 are on the shelf. The cross is quick and the DC working-voltage evidence is the gap you have to close.

Send us one transient-suppression line from your BOM and we will return the Walsin candidates with the differences stated and the stock position named. If your clamp level falls between two steps, which side do you design for?
